TWENTY-SIX

HANNAH

I’ve spent the past few hours trying to devise a plan for my escape, but my lids have begun to feel heavy and burdened, unable to bear the gravity of everything. My makeshift bed on the floor is now my sanctuary against the exhaustion. As I lie here, begging for sleep to take me, my body senses the threat of danger seconds before my door smashes into the wall behind it.

Apparently, I’m not as forgotten as I previously thought.

Gabby’s enraged entrance quickly eliminates the fatigue from my eyes, and I watch as she stands in the doorway, breathing fire with her disdain.

Adrenaline courses through me and my body readies itself for a fight.

She angry, and she’s here for blood.

In anticipation, my heart races, beating loudly in my ears as my eyes focus on her intensity. Her clenched fists. Her quivering lip. She stands, leering down over her nose, seething through gritted teeth. She’s so rigid and tense that every fibre of muscle in her forearms is visible.

Before I have a chance to react, she storms toward me, grabbing my hair with a battle cry tearing from her throat. It echoes in the mostly unfurnished room, reiterating her fury.

Using my matted locks as a handle, she forces my face toward hers, only inches separating us. Her warm breath circulates with my own, while I tremble under her turbulent blue glare.

With my hair still tangled in her fingers, she screeches in my face while violently shaking my head from side to side.

“WHY DOES HE STILL LOVE YOU?! WHY?!”

My hands reach up to unwind her fingers, but she’s locked them tight around the strands. A frustrated scream bursts from her as she slams my head into the floor. Stars float across my vision as an intense throbbing pulsates where my head made contact with the cold ceramic. I unsteadily sway like a pendulum woven in her grip, confused and disoriented.

“EVEN WHEN HE THINKS YOU’RE DEAD, HE CAN’T LET YOU GO!”

Her ramblings only add to my jumbled thoughts.

Gavin? He still loves me?

“We were going to make love again, and your ghost came between us! YOU STILL HAUNT HIM!”

I knot twists in my stomach, feeling sick from her words.

“HE’S MINE! STAY OUT OF HIS MIND!” she warns as if I can control his thoughts from where I sit imprisoned in this room.

She slams my head again and something warm trickles down the side of my face. My fingers gloss over the liquid, bringing it in front of me. I stare at the red staining the tips as a weak moan escapes me. My body sways again, struggling to remain upright.

I need to fight! I can’t let her win! I’m stronger than this!

I draw every ounce of remaining strength to sit up and feebly claw at her eyes. Her hands go up to stop the attack, not noticing the forgotten tray nearby. Using the advantage of her bent over in front me, I grasp it tightly in my hand and turn it into a weapon, using the momentum of my falling body to swing hard.
